🇩🇪❗️A new investigation by Germany’s ZDF has revealed that, in the days leading up to the knife attack in Mannheim, internet users in Russia were actively searching for information about a “terrorist attack in Germany.”

According to investigator, this could point to prior knowledge of the crime: “We’re seeing search queries from Russia about the attacker in advance, even the name.”

Russian users were also searching for live broadcasts from Mannheim’s market square, the location of the incident.

how could they know what some random people from russia searched for?

@phanecak I don't know who/what ZDF is but why would search companies just hand over data like that?

@MAKS23 Law?

Very simplified version:
- There is a country
- Country has among other things laws, courts and police
- Search company operates in such a country
- Police has, according to law, ability to demand some info from such a company
- If such company does not comply, court can order penalties

@phanecak is ZDF some sort of law enforcement agency? All I could find is it was a television.
And in the case of companies like Yandex it would probably be a safe bet that they wouldn't cooperate with foreign law enforcement.

@MAKS23 Here I guess that ZDF is reporting about what German police said they uncovered. E.g. ZDF is telling us what German police told them.
