I've been with #Spotify for 10 years, but I'm now considering switching to #Tidal. I don't like the way Spotify is going: shifting focus to podcasts, paying shit to musicians... I'd rather see my money go to them than to Rogan.
But it's not just about me, I have my whole family on our family plan. I have to be sure about it and convince them. If you have made the switch, what had been your experience?

How is it working in Linux?

I did the switch the other way years ago due to very poor Linux support and back then they also managed to break the web player on Linux. Support just replied "Linux is not a priority for us".

in reply to 🔗 David Sommerseth

@dazo the web client works fine, but doesn't support the highest audio quality. There is Tidal HiFi app on Flathub that supports it. It's not as good as providing an official Linux app, but probably fine by me. Spotify doesn't have HiFi quality in the fist place.

I was Tidal user before, but they didn’t had Rammstein in library.. or they had, but not for CZ. Not sure how it is now, but be aware that some things might not be available.
in reply to ronny

@ronny Rammstein is there, ufff... But it's my concern, too. Especially about Czech music. I wouldn't mind it much, but the rest of the family would.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

I just checked and CZ/SK music is there. Even Kája a Bambuláček 😁

I think there might be somewhat recent library update as I think that was the reason I went for deezer.

Bought subscription for one month and will check it out

in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

I did this a while back. And it was a bit of a conversation in my family about it -- it has impacted our teen the most. I've gone back to local media, mostly.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

I’ve dumped Spotify couple months ago and let them know that I am not willing to pay for Joe Rogan…

It caused some discomfort at home, but we already had Apple Music family subscription, so it was an easy choice…

Tidal seems to be also a good choice according to this source: https://youtu.be/FZ17btmzNK8?si=XrQszTPGt2z4NkAW (screenshot from the video)

following the exact same thought process now except wondering about qobuz. How to know what's right?
in reply to awoodland

@awoodland Qobuz looks good, too, but their family plan is almost twice as expensive as Tidal's.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

ah interesting, I was looking at the duo plan and bemoaning the lack of a cheaper duo option on tidal. Either way Spotify have gotten the message now.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

This was also my motivation to switch to Tidal. Unfortunately, I have had bad experiences with the Android app so far. The offline mode is garbage. Also normalizing the volume is very bad. I hope that changes soon. Otherwise I'm looking for another provider. Do you use it on iOS?
in reply to stoamandl 🔰

@stoamandl No, I also use Android. I've got a month to evaluate it, so let's see how it will work for me.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

Why I switched to Tidal
- Better sound quality
- Regional pricing in Hungary, therefore a bit cheaper for me
- It still pays artists more

What could be improved
- No official app for Linux
- Spotify's recommendations feel better
- Desktop app (for other OSes) doesn't even support downloading music for offline play, so it's basically same as the webapp
- No Discord integration

in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

im on YouTube music, and I really like it, the recommendations are better than Spotify. And as a bonus, you also get no ads on YouTube, as well as each view you give to a video pays the creator much more than an free ad supported view! There is also a family plan, I think it's the best value if you also use YouTube

in reply to Adaoh

@Adaoh I have a YouTube Premium subscription, so it'd be an option, but the family plan doesn't quite work for us. A long time ago we set up "business" accounts to have Gmail on a custom domain and those can't be grouped in family plans. We'd have to ditch our Google accounts first.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

Interested in that as well. On #Spotify more out of old habit, really. The main thing keeping me from just doing it is @listenbrainz tbh.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

we’ve switched originally to Deezer, before settling on Apple Music. I was waiting for HiFi quality for too long and just like you I didn’t like where Spotify shifted starting with app redesigned that forced podcasts.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

the main reason I'm staying with Spotify is integration. It works everywhere with everything. I also have YouTube Music as part of the Premium subscription but I don't use it much. I thought about switching but I can't. Tidal has at least built-in app in my car. Maybe if YouTube Music had it too, it might be enough for me to switch...
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

Ultimately, the biggest barrier to leaving #Spotify will be Spotify Connect. Some devices in the family will have to be left behind. Other than that I think #Tidal is able to completely replace Spotify.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

i am using tidal for some time now and i prefer it because it has better sound and better selection of niche styles. but never had use (or knowledge) of spotify connect
in reply to Jiří Eischmann :fedora:

já jsem s Tidalem vcelku spokojený, jen české interprety to nevyhledává úplně dobře a ta již zmíněná integrace. Pokud nějaká služba má integraci hudby, tak je to Spotify.

Spotify je notoricky známé pro sledování lecčehos, jak je na tom Tidal netuším.
Tidal naopak měl nějakou kontroverzi s manipulací vyplácení odměn, ale blíže jsem to nezkoumal. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_(service)
