Does exercise matter? New study shows an 11 year difference in life expectancy between the least and the most active.

I get that if you do not exercise this sounds depressing. But as a former couch potato, here is my best advise:

When I was 30, I grew really tired of being in bad shape, and luckily I realised the only reason I never exercised was, it bored me. So I tried out 10 different ways to exercise, and suddenly I found something which I thought was fun…

By trying out different activities, I realised I was really triggered by a competitive element, when I tried badminton. Once I entered that court I got so into the game, I completely forgot I was exercising.

So I played badminton once every week for a couple of years, and because of all that exercise it became much easier to try out more ways of exercising.

The point is: Don't exercise — have fun! Try out different activities and find the one which makes your heart tick.

this really is great advice. Hopefully someone will see this and it changes their life forever.

Yeah, I am quite close to your experience.

A little bit after 30 I've looked at myself and found out, that if I have hard times catching my kids when they run away, then it's quite issue worth resolving - especially in my "top strong years".

When I told my colegues I'm going to commute with fast #eKickScooter to get at least a little workout, they laughed. Yet, I managed to get to work a little sweaty every time, so it worked out for me.

After around one year I've mixed that scooter with regular pedaling non-elec #MTB #bike and here we are - one more year later - I'm actually commuting on the bike mostly, my body is slowly recovering and it's fun after all - especially when you need to transport stuff that you're propably not supposed to transport with vehicle like that 😀

Also it spreads to people that are close to you, so 2 persons around me bought #eBikes and use it either daily or time after time for commuting as well.

Even though people seem not consider this a physical activity, they have to think again as it definitely is more active, than sitting in the bus or car. And if you actually want to excersice on ebike or ekickscooter, you just shut off the electric system 😀

I keep fit by cycling to work. I do enjoy it, but I think it works for me because it is part of my routine. I don't have to make a special effort to get out and exercise.

Excellent point. Forced exercise doesn't last, you really have to find the exercise you like doing. Bicycling for me.

This is great advice!

The best exercises are the ones you actually do.

I very much agree. Over decades I've had to find different things that I enjoy because #exercise is not one of them. There have been gaps and big changes in activity from 5-a-side football to #5Rhythms dance, until in retirement I succumbed to the need for a personal trainer, aka a 🐕

She ensures I have three walks every day, so while it's not cardio it's breaks and exercise that my aching joints can handle. #fitness

Personally I find swimming a form of exercise that works for me - I can chug up and down with little thought and use the freed up brain time to plan things and solve problems...

for me it was when my brother got married and looking at photos I thought “who was the fat bastard in the same shirt as me?”

I’ve gone back a few times but hitting 53 the doctor reminds me to keep healthy so running a few times a week and eating healthier again. Already making a difference

It was #bicycling for me. About 12 years ago I discovered that commuting by bike wouldn't be much slower than driving, so I got a bike and started doing so. Then I got into the stats (I'm a numbers guy at heart) and gradually tried longer rides. Still biking today, although not to work, and still aiming for at least 1,000 miles per year for as long as I'm able.
