Curious. I want to follow someone from blahaj.zone, but I can't - no results in search. Tried random different accounts from there, nothing. And not just only on my self-hosted instance, also on another one, running Mastodon, not GTS as me. Quick googling didn't reveal any info if they've some strong fediblock measures. In server logs, I see that account URL was returned, which I can open in browser. But Mastodon, nor GoToSocial, don't display the search result, so I can't add the user to follow them.

Any tips, how to debug stuff like this? Or theories what might be happening?

Interesting. From what I've tried, requests to WebFinger successfully return data (e.g., acct:blahaj@blahaj.zone" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">blahaj.zone/.well-known/webfin…). The resulting URL (supporting the application/activity+json content-type) is this though: blahaj.zone/users/97ufbg2drc (nothing resembling the account name). So searching for [at]blahaj[at]blahaj.zone doesn't work (even though it should - it's supposed to resolve to the URL from the WebFinger), but if you search that weird URL, it works. 🤷‍♂️
