I just don't get the YouTube algorithm. My view count on the last five videos are all over the place:

I find this weird because some of the videos are extremely similar in quality, presentation, length, etc., yet they yield wildly different view counts.

So I looked up @anderspuck
and he has experienced similar inconsistencies.

I really wish that I could publish through a medium that was not such a roll of the dice every time.

What would be the disadvantage to publish it on your own website/webspace?
Just curious.
in reply to Gondor

@grootinside the lack of a wider audience and the lack of a proven monetization model.
in reply to Randahl Fink

I wonder if video-podcast way wouldn't work better? Not sure what are the options at this moment though
in reply to Randahl Fink

@grootinside the majority of your views already comes from Mastodon. So directing this audience to a different Plattform / Website shouldent be a Problem.

The money thing, ... I have absolutley no idea.

in reply to Randahl Fink

Every version has it's disadvantage.
The wider audience is used to convenient random shown "new" vids and probably a (easy to manipulate) search engine.
The creator is used to a "lack" of hassle to monetize and promote his/her work even more.

On the other hand both *lose control about the content* the can show/see.
#context #algorithm

🤔

I'd try both, if i'd be a creator. Don't know if there are companies which could then monetize my content following *my* rules though.

@grootinside Reasonable. I guess the first questions are: Who is your intended audience, where are they found, and what format do they want to use?

For example, my first choice is reading; I read very quickly. Second choice is audio podcasts. Last choice for me is video, so I only watch them when I have time.

in reply to Randahl Fink

It could just be the interest of your audience. People tend to watch videos they agree with and that are in line with their own interests. Someone that is not interested in financial news will not likely watch a video about something financial (and vice versa)
in reply to Randahl Fink

do your differing views correlate with the CTR and avg view durations?
in reply to Dave Ackley

@livcomp unfortunately no. There is no meaningful correlation between stats like click through rate, retention rate or anything, that would explain the wildly fluctuating view counts.
in reply to Randahl Fink

I find that the fluctuations are very much tied to the topic. I knew before publishing that a video about the landmine treaty would get relatively few views. But I have decided that I don't want to chase the algorithm, so I will cover the topics I think are important.
in reply to Randahl Fink

In case of the two screenshot, I would say I could have told you before.

Russian war economics is a saturated topic.
I get at least 2 videos of this topic per week in my YT Timeline.
