I’m sharing this anecdote because it shows how it is important to speak up. Each one of us can make a small difference.
Discussion about the kidnapping of Maduro last night at dinner with my extended family. General consensus: it’s the law of the strongest, it should be expected.
Meanwhile, me: it’s incredibly dangerous to normalize these actions and accept them. This is not normal… if we change the baseline of what a country can do in the international stage, then that country will take the lack of reactions as a sign… and do something even more shocking in the future. People shrugged and said “we see your point but it is what it is”. Still, I like to think I planted some seeds in their minds regarding the dangers of normalizing extrajudicial actions like what happened yesterday.
Then: two people at the table had their hands glued to their cell phones looking up facts on LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini and Mistral.
So I had to have my saying about the dangers of using LLMs as search engines, their biases and real objectives. I spoke of the loss of critical thinking and… got eye rolls. But an adult at the table (70+) agreed with me.
Then I suggested that people relinquish their cell phones… and put them on a coffee table in the other side of the room so we could have a conversation without the internet - or LLMs - getting in the way.
More eye rolls and protests… but everyone eventually agreed… except for a 22 year old who protested “how can I get my facts?”… and put her cell phone in her pocket. So for another hour we all talked face to face without anyone scrolling or looking things up on LLMs.
Maybe it’s because I’m an only child but I’m not afraid to speak my mind… even when my opinion isn’t the popular one and I appear to be the “wet blanket” of the family.
Speaking up is important.
These are dark, difficult times but we can all resist.

Bravo! 👏
It's hard to speak up in situations like that feeling like a lone wolf howling in the wilderness…but the thing I've found as I've grown older is it's harder not to speak up. Keeping truth bottled up inside eats away at your soul. I never want to go back to that horrible feeling!

It feels so frustrating feeling like I’m the only one speaking up when I hear blatant misinformation about LLMs and politics being brought up irl. I’ll pick my battles online but I can’t hold back when I hear such excuses as “ it’s just a machine, what’s so bad” while disregarding the environmental impact or notions that it “thinks” and isn’t just a racist pile of liner algebra trained on stolen data.
Thank you so much for sharing and speaking up.

I hear you. I can never stay silent on these issues… even if my speaking up creates tensions / strong disagreements.
I will always always speak up 🥲

Until quite some time back my reaction was "what an idiot, no point of trying to change his mind"
But somehow these "idiots" were getting more and more common. Propably because I was idiot and was quiet while others had to listen to thiss stuff..
It's not smart to expect people to know everything about everything or spend their time looking up informations. Ain't nobody got time for this!

Anyway, I continue to speak up, even if I feel ignored ✊

no judgement - there are lots of different use cases.
What makes my head explode is to see highly educated, otherwise smart people use LLMs as if they were search engines… so I feel like I have to speak up

thanks but I didn’t really do much… I just wanted to normalize speaking up when you’re one against 8 people who have opposing views.
I think it’s important to plant seeds and offer different perspectives. Gosh especially about LLMs… I don’t see any critical POVs in mainstream news here in France, just fawning. Ditto for regular people who don’t think twice about using them for simple searches that would be better conducted at the source.
I’m the wet blanket / Cassandra / Jiminy Cricket of the family… but I wouldn’t do things any other way 🥲
