Wow! I just responded to a Lemmy (Fediverse Reddit analog) post from my Mastodon (Fediverse oldTwitter analog) account within my Mastodon GUI.

I didn't even realize it was a Lemmy post...

I clicked on the original Lemmy link and saw my Mastodon post as a reply within the Lemmy thread.

See attached for screenshots of the same conversation in both application's UI's.

The fediverse is fucking awesome.

I'm on both Mastodon and Lemmy and love them both but I still don't really see the utility of this - what's the use beyond being "cool"?

(Not a native english speaker so I didn't put everything here.)
First cool thing is you don't need to create an account on another social media to talk with people.
Thus, these media have less chance to gather everyone in one place and be the only one used and ruled by one person.

@stooovie not having to have like 10 different accounts to participate in communities that tickle your fancy is a good enough reason i think
in reply to halva

but that's not how it works. I can not and never could, for example, log into a Lemmy instance with my Mastodon account, or více versa

@stooovie @halva - You don't need to log into a Lemmy instance with your Mastodon account. You just post natively to it, like I showed.

All you have to do is take post on lemmy instance, put it into searchbox and voila - feel free to rate/comment/whatever.

On #Friendica I also can follow Lemmy communities and so on.

I'd call it breaking borders of #Fediverse 😀

@schmaker @halva it's very awkward and completely unintuitive. I get the theoretical appeal (I'm a big fan of the fediverse!) but the implementation will need to evolve
in reply to Jiří Fiala Total Landscaping

Yeah, well, it propably will (someday) evolve to button "answer from my instance", but so far it's still faster than logging in on different server 😀
in reply to Schmaker

doesn't work anyway. I copy the URL of a lemmy.world post, put it into search box in Mastodon, and get "Could not find anything for these search terms". I remember doing this with a Pixelfed post so I know it works, but it doesn't now.

@Jiří Fiala Total Landscaping
It works well for me on Friendica and afaik Mastodon handles these too.

Not sure why it does not work for you on mas.to - maybe it's disabled somehow?

in reply to Jiří Fiala Total Landscaping

@stooovie - It means that I dont need to create a new account on every piece of software. I can follow them all from one place. I only need to create accounts where I want to post the content or experience the UI.

Perfect example for me. I have a local group account on Mobilizon. I dont have to create a local group account on Mastodon, or Pixelfed, or, any number of other applications. I can just post the group event to Mobilizon and it gets reposted throughout the fediverse natively.

@tothedaring @schmaker @halva yes, I do see the future potential. Thanks!
